Let's all get this out of the way and agree that anything you can put on a slice of boring gluten-free bread, you can enjoy more on The Greater Knead bagels! It's true because our bagels are soft, denser, and chewier which creates an extremely satisfying bagel sandwich experience. The only hole in our bread is the one we baked intentionally in the middle of the gluten-free bagel, lol.
The Italian submarine-style sandwiches are associated with the early 19th-century Italian American communities from the northeast USA. The Italian sub merges a variety of cured deli meats, cheeses with crunchy lettuce/vegetables, Italian seasonings, and a heavy dose of zingy olive oil and vinegar dressing.
Gluten-Free Toppings / Add-ons
When it comes to deli, there are so many favorites to choose from. Always look for the marked gluten-free brands. At the grocery store ask the deli counter rep to wipe down all of the slicers, change gloves, and ask them if they are comfortable with a free from cross-contamination area of bread crumbs and other concerns. We suggest you make friends with your deli reps at the store and they will remember you, and take good care of your dietary needs. Gluten-Free Italian sub sandwiches are always made of deli meats. Whether you choose ham, salami, provolone, prosciutto, pepperoni or other deli there are vegan options. It goes without saying but please read the labels and choose your toppings wisely. When in doubt say no, and try something else that you can trust. Luckily, olive oil, crushed oregano, tomatoes, and lettuce are all naturally gluten-free and free from the top 9 allergens. Vinegar can be tricky though so be sure that you contact the manufacturer to learn about the vinegar sources when in doubt. Avoid malt vinegar and rye vinegar for sure.

Gluten Free Italian Sub Bagel
- 4 The Greater Knead Plain Bagels
- 4 ounces provolone cheese slices
- 4 ounces deli ham slices
- 4 ounces Genoa salami slices
- 4 ounces Prosciutto slices
- 4 ounces pepperoni slices
- ½ head iceberg lettuce, finely shredded
- 1 large tomato, sliced
- ½ large red onion, thinly slice
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- Kosher or fine sea salt
- Freshly ground black pepper
- Olive oil
- Red wine vinegar
Reheat the bagels approximately 60 seconds in microwave or until soft throughout. Afterwards, toast if desired.
Lay out the bottom portions of the bagels.
Layer on the cheese and meat slices.
Top with lettuce, tomato slices, and red onion slices.
Sprinkle on oregano, a large pinch of salt and pepper and drizzle with equal amounts of oil and vinegar.
